An Iris that I painted some time ago and the rest of the page was empty. A good opportunity to draw some Ginko Biloba leaves; a study in patience, as the leaves have several tiny veins. All colors of green, yellow, orange and brown. From translucent orange to vandijcksearth. (never mind the Iris…)p1010228

I was in Schwalenberg, in the Teutenbürger Wald in Germany for a few days. It used to be an artist colony, and though the fame is a bit pas, it still is an attractive small town in the woods. I painted the clematis on the wal of an old shed. This time I used a new brand of purple, the Old Holland Classic Watercolors; the dioxine mauve. It has a real lasting and vibrant pigment I think. For the others the usual Schmincke Horadam colors; I especially like their Vandijcksearth.P1010212

Bulbs are coming to bloom in my garden; Calla or Zantedeschia. I bought these mixed in color, but they all turn out to be a lovely purple/rosa. So I took out the bulb, cleaned it a bit…upstairs for drawing…..and back in the garden again…. Mangan- cobalt violet and cadmium yellow/madder red dark for the flowers and olive green/green olive for the leaves. Umber natur, vanDijckeart, translucent brown, Terra Puzzoli, burned sienna and gold brown for the bulb.calla

Cold outside; as yet few colours in nature so I went for another dry leave. A plataan, Platanus or plane tree. Elegant line to this leave and interesting colours: indigo/cadmyellow, Vandijcksearth, translucent brown, umber natur, madder brown, some water spotting.P1000144

Last month I visited the University Botanical Garden and found lots of shells(!, in the gravel), herbs and dried pods of flowers. I collected a few and have enough work to last me some time, if I want to paint all of them. I am thinking of drawing just one enlarged flower of petal instead of a branch of bunch of flowers. Anyway, from the botanical garden is the leek (kraallook) and some unknown pods. I started to use earth pigment for these and I like it. The leek got a touch of gold brown, burned sienna and mauve. For the aster novi-belgii(herfstaster); lots of tiny flowers and petals. Instead of the usual olive green, I used chroom dark green and some permanent green. Naples yellow, mangan violet and purple magenta for the petals.DSC02409

And the last of my impressions of India of my travel in november 2013. Drawing this in our cold climat; 2C. I was in an animal shelter, predominantly for cows, near Bikaner. They also take care of monkees and birds in that place. I picked up some feathers of peacock, I think. It is quite a challenge to get them right. Cerulan blue, silver, walnutbrown, gold, grey, helio turquoise, helio green and the earth colours for the pod.DSC00291

In the Thar desert, near Bikaner, I saw shrubs of white/purple giant milkweed or calotropis procera. Inside the stalks of this plant is a milky fluid, said to be toxic for human. Animals, goats eat it. The shrubs can grow quite tall.DSC00130
